Certain foods have such a wide variety of health benefits that they have become popularly known as superfoods. These natural foods are gaining recognition for their numerous advantages, things like:

  • Delaying the aging process.
  • Preventing cancer and other illnesses.
  • Strengthening the immune system.
  • Lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.

These are just some of the health benefits superfoods provide. Needless to say, these foods make excellent additions to one’s daily diet. The following are ten superfoods that boost vitality and promote longevity.

1. Blueberries

Blueberries contain vitamins C and E, and a powerful cocktail of antioxidants, including compounds called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are the pigment which gives this superfood its blue color. They are believed to play a large role in its numerous health benefits, which include the prevention of cancer and warding off the effects of aging. Because they also lower cholesterol and blood pressure, blueberries are great for heart health.

2. Soy

Soy is packed with nutrition. These beans are rich in protein, fiber, zinc, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Soy helps to reduce cholesterol levels. Its high fiber content makes it wonderful for weight-loss. Furthermore, isoflavonoids found in soy can help to prevent certain types of cancer. Soy can be consumed in many forms, including edamame, soy milk, tofu, soy nut butter, etc.

3. Garlic

Garlic is powerhouse of health benefits. It is a great for maintaining heart health. Allicin, the compound which gives garlic its odor, helps to purge the body of cholesterol and prevent blood-clotting. Garlic can also reduce the risk of certain cancers. Research suggests, it may even slow the spreading of cancer cells. Garlic has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties, and it strengthens immunity. Studies have shown that, among people suffering from common colds, those who consumed this superfood recovered more quickly. Garlic is a versatile herb and can be added to many dishes.

4. Salmon

Rich in vitamins A and D, protein, and healthy fats, this fish has earned its place among the top superfoods. Salmon are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids which help to prevent blood-clotting and reduce inflammation. Research has shown that regular consumption of salmon reduces the risk of heart attack. It is also beneficial for mental health. Salmon fights depression and protects the brain against the onset of dementia.

5. Walnuts

Walnuts contain Vitamin E, magnesium, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, protein and important amino acids. This superfood is excellent for cardiac health. It lowers cholesterol and prevents abnormal heart rhythms. Amino acids in walnuts reduce inflammation and help maintain elasticity in blood vessels. Walnuts can also prevent the accumulation of plaque along arterial walls that leads to hardening of the arteries.

6. Pomegranate

Pomegranate is an excellent source of vitamins A and C, and zinc. Like many of the superfoods on this list, it is great at lowering LDL cholesterol levels. It also protects arteries against damage caused by cholesterol. Studies reveal that it prevents blood-clotting, lowers blood pressure, and strengthens immunity. With its high antioxidant content, pomegranate helps to reduce the risk of cancer and combat the effects of aging.

7. Acai

Acai contains twice as many antioxidants as blueberries. It is also rich in fiber, protein and important amino acids. Acai wards off aging, prevents cancer, and encourages healthy digestion. Acai also regulates hormones, helping to keep insulin levels stable. While it may not be common on grocery store shelves, many health food stores offer unsweetened acai pulp.

8. Broccoli

A single cup of this green superfood contains more Vitamin C than an orange. It is also a valuable source of Vitamin A, calcium, magnesium, manganese, folic acid, and dietary fiber. Broccoli is excellent for cardiovascular health. Its antioxidant content helps stave off the development of cancer. One antioxidant in particular, lutein, helps to maintain healthy eyesight and slow the progression of macular degeneration.

9. Avocado

Not only does avocado provide nutrients like Vitamin B, Vitamin E, and fiber, it also promotes absorption of vitamins and minerals. Avocado contains omega-3 fatty acids and 18 vital amino acids. This superfood increases healthy cholesterol and reduces harmful cholesterol. It promotes clear, healthy skin. It helps maintain cardiovascular health. Not only can it help prevent cancer, studies show that compounds in avocado actually attack cancerous cells. Like broccoli, avocado contains the antioxidant lutein which is great for eye health.

10. Tomato

A single, medium-sized tomato contains about 50% of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C. Also a valuable source of Vitamin E, beta-carotene and the powerful antioxidant lycopene, tomatoes help prevent heart disease and cancer. They also promote healthy vision. Tomatoes are beneficial whether they are fresh or cooked . While raw tomatoes may contain more vitamins, tomato sauces have higher concentrations of lycopene.
